A few months ago I had a rather divine massage with the very talented healer, Cassie Tyson, who works at the Purple House Natural Therapies. I’d hurt my back – it’s always been an issue since a pretty rough delivery with Poppy, and every now and then I niggle it and it can be quite painful. Cassie suggested getting some more gelatin and collagen into my diet to help strengthen my connective tissues. Gelatin is also great for repairing gut lining and aiding digestion, detoxification, skin elasticity and strengthening hair and nails – all of which I wouldn’t say no to! I usually have bone broth (a rich source of collagen and gelatin) simmering on the fire, as well as stocked up in the freezer, but at the time (the beginning of autumn), I’d run dry. So Cassie suggested I get some beef gelatin and turn it into ‘gelly’ treats! When Cassie told me the ingredients (zero in sugar – not even a pinch of ‘natural’ sugar), I thought it sounded…ah…’interesting’. But then I finally got around to making these balls of gelatinous-fatty-goodness, and oh my, they are actually surprisingly delicious! These little treats are a great way of getting more gelatin, collagen and good fat into your diet, as well as a sugar-free treat that will satisfy even those with a sweet tooth (like me!). These are also chocolate/caffeine free, so a great choice for those who are sensitive to cacao.

Here’s one of the variations of Cassie’s jug ‘o goodness:

Gelly Bombs!

Ingredients

1 heaped tsp mixed spice
1 tsp organic vanilla essence
1 tsp cinnamon
2 cups hot water
4 tbsp beef gelatin
Half avocado
400g can organic coconut cream (BPA free)
10 drops lemon essential oil
Squeeze fresh lemon juice

Method

  1. Steep mixed spice, vanilla and cinnamon in 1 cup of hot water for 30min.
  2. Pour steeped mixture into a food processor. Add gelatin, avocado and another cup of water and blend until smooth.
  3. Add coconut cream, lemon essential oil and lemon juice and blend until smooth.
  4. Pour into ice cube trays or into a slice tray and place in fridge until set.
  5. Once set, pop out of the trays and eat these little gelatinous gelly bombs unabashedly and with zero guilt!
