A couple of weeks ago I was hit down with a virus. I thought I was going to die (ok, slight over-exaggeration…but really…die!). During that time, I had little appetite. The only thing my body really thirsted for was pineapple. A massive big chunk of juicy, citrusy pineapple, whizzed up into the most delightful juice. I was so exhausted that the thought of going to the shops was out of the question, but thankfully my super awesome thoughtful mum went and did my groceries for me, and brought me back the most tastiest pineapple! Thanks Mum 🙂
I find it so amazing that our bodies intuitively crave what it needs to heal and repair. Pineapple has fantastic medicinal properties – the pineapple core especially has a high content of the super enzyme bromelain. What’s so great about this nutrient? Bromelain is a protein-digesting enzyme, and it has been shown to decrease mucous production, making it a medicinal food when you are struck with a cold or flu, or any other congestive conditions such as sinusitis, asthma, and allergies.
Bromelain has also been shown to be a powerful anti-inflammatory and anti-swelling agent. It can help soothe and relax tense, inflamed muscles. Bromelain has been used to treat a wide-range of muscular-skeletal issues, including arthritis, joint pain, ACL tears, sprained ankles, recovery from surgery and tendonitis. In addition, bromelain is also an awesome digestive aid as it helps breakdown proteins for digestion. Pretty awesome reason to include pineapple (including the core!) in your daily smoothie or fruit salad!
