What?! Coming from a Functional Medicine Practitioner…that is blasphemous?!

Ok, so maybe I do treat leaky gut. But not in the usual sense of feeding someone lots of gut healing supplements like glutamine and digestive enzymes. Why? Because this only leads to temporary relief, and doesn’t look at the root cause of the issue, which is very often emotional stress, coupled with GI tract tissue infections (i.e. nasty pathogens).

IMAGINE THIS…

Perhaps your leaky gut syndrome is actually a manifestation of something else, and if you only treat the symptom, you’ll end up getting sicker in the long run. For example, a person with a serious GI infection, treats their symptoms with digestive enzymes and leaky gut repair supplements or even probiotics, only to allow the GI infection to percolate and get worse over time.

One key concept in functional medicine is to treat the underlying cause, and leaky gut in and of itself isn’t a cause of anything, it’s most often simply a reaction.

The problem with figuring out the deeper layer is it involves two things humans aren’t fond of (lol): stool testing and dealing with our emotional issues. Unfortunately, if you are interested in getting a better understanding of your health problems, you have to confront these unpleasant areas of life.

It is amazing how quickly some of my clients’ ‘gut issues’ have disappeared, when they addressed emotional stress, and we knocked out nasty parasites, bacterial infections or yeast overgrowth. Pretty cool that you can heal leaky gut without a single gut-healing supplement needed, when you simply remove the blocks to healing!
